Metro Detroit's best burgers Detroit Free Press Nov 24, 2008
Best Loaded Burgers
Jaws Jumbo Burgers, Farmington Hills
Jaws Jumbo Burgers isn't highbrow, but if you love your burgers big, sizzling, sloppy with toppings and affordable, give it a try. Reader Doretha Morgan sent us there, promising the food was super fresh and so well-priced, she had stopped going to fast-food chains. The smallest Jaws burger is 1/3 pound of fresh ground round, cooked while you wait and topped with grilled onions, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard on an extra-wide, buttered, toasted sesame bun -- for $3.65. Local burger joints fry up some beauties

Kate Lawson / Detroit News Food Writer

Sometimes, a home-grilled burger is just the ticket, but other times, we love to throw on a pair of jeans and go out for one. Across Metro Detroit, it's easy to satisfy a burger appetite with everything from standard bar fare to the super-gourmet.

At Jaws Jumbo Burger, 29216 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills, manager Paul Porter created a Thank You Jay Leno Burger to show his appreciation for the comedian's free shows here earlier this year.

"We serve a standard 1/3 -pound ground sirloin, but the Leno burger is two patties, four strips of bacon, two slices of Swiss American cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms with mayo, tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, mustard and pickles," says Porter. It's $10.25, while the single burger is an affordable $3.65.

At the Vinsetta Grill, 28028 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak, owners Michael and Tracy Papa came up with a great idea for offering burgers to satisfy everybody.

"We call it 'the build-your-own-burger' and offer four different types -- from ground beef, to ground turkey, to veggie that we make in-house to a chicken," says Tracy Papa. Prices start at $7.99 for a standard 1/3 -pound burger and you can work your way up to a 1-pound burger loaded to your liking.

For your no-frills, but no less delicious, bar burger, look to Miller's Bar, 23700 Michigan Ave., Dearborn. Dennis Miller, who owns the bar with brother Mark, says they keep it simple with straightforward ground sirloin made fresh every day and served on a standard bun.

"We don't use any seasonings -- you add your own mustard and ketchup," says Miller, who boasts the bar serves 1,000 burgers a day, six days a week. Each one is made to order and prices start at $4.75.

Tribute restaurant feeds gigantic appetites with fresh ingredients
Take a bite outta' this: When it comes to pop culture icons, sweet memories of summer nights at the drive-in movie, and the heavenly smells of burgers on the grill, perhaps one image beacons us like us no other  "Jaws."

Continuing a tribute to the late Roy Scheider, who was most famous for co-starring with a great white shark in the movie that made us all afraid to go into the water, Jaws Jumbo Burgers will show the film all day today from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on the big screens around the room.

The burger spot at 29216 Orchard Lake Road between 12 and 13 Mile in Farmington Hills offers reasonably priced ground round burgers ($5.99, including fries and a large soft drink). Another popular dish is the Great White double fish sandwich ($5.10).

In addition to its movie theme, its freshly squeezed lemonade and fluffy milkshakes, the restaurant is notable in that it takes cash only. Call (248) 855-2228.

Offering Leno Some Options

Reeling" Them In

Every restaurant wants filled seats and a packed house, but with the construction on Orchard Lake Road, it can be a bit of a challenge. Jaws Jumbo Burgers on Orchard Lake Road, between 12 Mile and 13 Mile, is taking advantage of the situation.

Johnny Jaws, the new shark mascot, entertains and greets the bumper-to-bumper traffic. Manager Paul Porter says, the new Johnny Jaws mascot is really "reeling" them in, pun intended. Jaws Jumbo Burgers is also celebrating Shark week Aug. 2-6, showing shark movies and documentaries between 3-7 p.m. Visit www.jawsjumboburgers.net.

Jaws Jumbo Burgers is named after the smash blockbuster hit "Jaws", this restaurant is equated to a theme park experience. Jaws Jumbo Burgers features "Jaws" movie posters, cast and crew shots, 185 gallon shark fish aquarium, shark decor, and action adventure movies playing on five 50" plasma screen TVs with surround sound and vision. Family adventure movies such as "Jaws," "Jurassic Park," "Terminator," "Spiderman," and "Men In Black" are played daily. The food is the equivalent to a 1950s style burger joint: Old-Fashioned 1/3-lb fresh ground round burgers on a buttered toasted bun and the fries are made fresh to order. The fresh squeezed lemonade and real ice-cream milk shakes are a treat even if you are not a "Jaws" movie fan. Call (248) 855-2228 or visit jawsjumboburgers.net for more info. They're open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. Cash only.

Everything Is Big At JAWS Jumbo Burgers
There's more than one reason they call it JAWS Jumbo Burgers. You've got to have a mouth as big as a shark's to bite into the burgers served here. On top of that, the name reflects the Jaws theme that's carried through the restaurant with shark movies, shark memorabilia and a live shark tank.
JAWS Jumbo Burgers is a basic burger joint, punched up with personality that makes it an entertaining, family-friendly place to eat.

"It's sort of like getting a bar burger where you don't have to go to a bar to do it," said manager Paul Porter. "It's a non-smoking environment, and it's absolutely kid friendly."

The straightforward menu includes single or double-decker burgers, with or without cheese and bacon, topped with tomato, shredded lettuce, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard on a buttered, toasted bun. Or, customers can opt for a Great White fish fillet or Chicken Delight instead of the 1â„3-pound patty of ground round.

Offerings continue with wing dings, fish and chips, fresh squeezed lemonade and old fashioned blender ice cream milkshakes. That's about it, but the simple menu works because the burgers are the bomb.

Porter said owner David Stein opened the restaurant five years ago in Southfield to recreate burgers he recalled from his childhood. JAWS was mainly a carry-out venue until it relocated to Farmington Hills last January.

Now in a plaza on Orchard Lake Road between 12 and 13 Mile, JAWS offers a 48-seat dining room. As soon as you place your order with the ultra-friendly staff at the counter, everything is made to order.

"We get the beef, we patty it out, we cut all the veggies fresh," Porter said. "We call ourselves 'fast-er' food."

Meanwhile, you pour your own soda and take a seat until your name is called. There's plenty to look at while you wait.

Plasma screen TVs show various action adventure films, from Spider-Man to Jurassic Park. Of course, shark-themed movies are favorites (the restaurant recently staged a weeklong shark movie marathon as a tribute to late Jaws star Roy Scheider). When children come in, features are changed to family fare like Finding Nemo, Night at the Museum or Shark Tale.

The shark motif continues with movie posters on the walls, plastic shark figurines perched on countertops, fishing nets strung on the windows and seashells on the sills. A huge papier mache hammerhead bites into a JAWS burger over the front door.

The centerpiece of the decor is the 185-gallon freshwater tank stocked with live iridescent sharks (yes, the real thing).

But after all, this place is more about the food, and the burgers don't disappoint.

The patties are juicy, the bacon is cooked to crisp perfection, the toppings are fresh and the fries are hot and salty. In addition to dining in, it's a great place to grab lunch on the run or pick up bags of burgers for office luncheons. Customers are encouraged to call ahead so carry-outs are ready when they arrive.

"We don't cook your French fries until you come in," Porter said. "That way if you get stuck in traffic, your fries won't be cold."

Best of all, the prices are right. A JAWS Jumbo Deluxe Burger Combo with fries and a pop is $5.99. The meal is sure to leave you stuffed for the rest of the day.

But make sure you come with cash.

Jaws doesn't take credit cards, and you won't want those sharks coming after you.
